Band History

The Dixieland Allstars

This band was organized in 1974 by ‘Buddy’ Clark of Dubuque, Iowa. Dubuqueland could hear the swingin’ sounds of dixieland music once a week for the next 27 years in many different venues in the Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin tri-state area. Original members included Buddy Clark, bass; Bunny Dillon, piano; Dick Spautz, drums; Larry Busch, trumpet, Tom Richards, trombone, and Harley Grant, clarinet. Later, Dick Spautz ran the band with Al Schmidt, piano, Mark Oberfell, bass, Dave Richter, bass and banjo; Marty Busch, trombone, and Ken Kilian, clarinet. Since Dick Spautz’s passing, Larry Busch has been leading this fun band with the later members, but with Chuck Bregman, piano. Tom Richards and Larry Busch wrote all of the fine arrangements for this band, from the ‘Jazz Me Blues’ and ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz’, to the ‘Saint Louis Blues’ and ‘Just A Closer Walk With Thee’.

  • Marty Busch and Monte Muller, trombones
  • Luke Busch, Rob Shepherd, and Bill Schwantes, saxes-clarinets-flutes
